Randall Slaughter Artist/Lettering Artist – Randall Slaughter Artwork
Cleveland, Ohio, Midwest, USA
2. What’s your educational and professional background, i.e., college, professional
school, high school, apprenticeship, etc.?
I have a Bachelors degree in Graphic Design from The University of Akron. I also have 11 years of learning and lettering alongside Le Buu, Martha Ericson, Terri Long and Mike Gold while working for American Greetings – that has been my invaluable apprenticeship and a huge boost to my letter making.
3. Preferred tool(s) and medium?
I LOVE a good pointed pen. I LOVE cola pens or folded pens. I LOVE ruling pens. I LOVE bamboo pens. And recently I AM LOVING SPRAY PAINT. And I am fascinated with finding other things to make marks/letters with: sticks, Q-tips, straws, ink droppers, dried out old markers (coined “sad markers” by a close lettering friend), stiff/crusty paint brushes, grease pencils, sharpies of all shapes & sizes and good old #2 pencils. Any ink I can get my hands on but I would LOVE to win a lifetime supply of Quink Ink!
4. Where or how do you “recharge your creative battery,” i.e., books, blogs, music, art,
exercise, meditation, prayer, hobbies, interests, etc.?
Music would probably be my main (or constant) source of inspiration…some sort of music is going most waking moments of my life. Spotify is KILLER. And the range is all over the place. Loads of jazz, indie, classic rock and a decent amount of sappy 70’s FM GOLD.
Many mornings I hear some lyric or song that stands out to me and I have to grab paper, ink and a tool to start the day – a very nice way to warm up.
Cy Twombly – DeKooning – Joan Mitchell – Diebenkorn & Matisse
And I am constantly inspired/driven by a handful of close friends who are daily pushing creative boundaries in their own work.
Graffiti, street grunge, the energy and sounds in any city.
The sky, coffee & SUNSHINE – are all very high on my list.
5. Tell us something about you that might surprise or delight us.
I scoop ice cream one day a week at a local ice cream store. I am addicted to their vanilla bean; it’s the best I have ever tasted.
also: I love to make & send cards/postcards. I have a soft spot for snail mail. Not bills or junk mail but cool, artsy cards & postcards – I really enjoy making funky stuff and sending it through the mail – who doesn’t like to get some whacked piece of mail?
