Ritchie Is Wild About Letters

1.  What’s your name and title/business name? Where are you located, city, state, country location?

Hi my name is Ritchie – a few years ago I moved from Germany to Switzerland, Zürich. I live here with my wife and my little daughter. When ever I have time I love to sit down to my desk and draw some letters.

2. What’s your educational and professional background, i.e., college, professional school, high school, apprenticeship, etc.?

When I was around 16 years old I started with graffiti. Did it for a long time but then I stopped drawing for almost ten years. I have no education or design diploma. In 2017 I [fell] in love with type – I learned all the basics for it through the internet. And then I just tried it myself. Everyday I try to improve myself, explore stuff and as well. I love to see what other [artists] create. We all can learn from each other no matter on what level the other person might be. Within the community I love to share experience and knowledge with each other! With my background [in] graffiti I sometimes love to put a few elements into my letterings. This [is] quite refreshing for me.

3. Preferred tool(s) and medium?

I guess I started like everyone else – very simple and basic – paper and pencil. After half a year when i discovered the [Procreate] app  I [immediately] knew I needed – this is it! So right now – most of my recent posts on Instagram are made on the iPad. I don’t know if I have a fav tool tho – I just love to draw with every tool I can actually. If you like to see more of my designs  [you’re] more then welcome to head over to my instagram page and say hello.

4. Where or how do you “recharge your creative battery,” i.e., books, blogs, music, art, exercise, meditation, prayer, hobbies, interests, etc.?

That’s a really difficult and important question. I think you can’t come up and say  – oh yeah today I want to be creative. Sometimes you just need a break from all this to recharge your batteries to get your mind rolling again. Sometimes it needs a bit more time for me. I try to draw everyday just a little. There also these days I just go through books, magazines or platforms on the web. I also love strolling through the city to check signs, graffitis, windows of restaurants to see if I can’t find any inspiration or ideas I can put into my lettering. Everything I see I document either on my phone or in a little sketch book. For me this is the best way to document. And a great resource as well to look for inspiration when I start a new project. But the best way to recharge my batteries is to spent as much time as possible with my family. The support of my wife is just amazing. Without her I would probably not be at this point to share my story and answer these question for the interview. Thank you my love!

5. Tell us something about you that might surprise or delight us.

Around two month ago a started an initiative on Instagram which is called #wildaboutletters

The idea behind this is to bring together the passion about letters in all their forms and beauty. It might even go further – there is always a story behind the piece but also a story behind the artist! Our backgrounds are so different as our styles of letters. I would love to bring this together. Your story and your art matters. When did you start ? What keeps you on track? Let the world know who stands behind your masterpieces. If you read this feel free to check the hashtag to read wonderful stories which were already shared for this initiative. And if you like to share yours get your gear out and create something amazing and let the world know who you are.
