The Anatomy of Letters with Sarah Kim

1. Your name and title/business name? City, Country location?

My name is Sarah Kim and I’m a freelance Graphic Designer/Illustrator in Upstate New York.

2. What’s your educational and professional background, i.e., college, professional school, high school, apprenticeship, etc.?

I’ve always been interested in art since High School. I was more sucked into the fine art world versus the digital; my mediums of choice were oil paint, charcoal and pastels. Then came College, where I was surprisingly told by my fine arts chairman that I belonged with the graphic design students, which of course led me to switch my major. In 2014, I graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in graphic design from the Maryland Institute College of Art, located in the good old Charm City aka Baltimore, Maryland.
Immediately after graduating, I found myself in Columbus, Ohio working as a Women’s Brand Designer for Abercrombie & Fitch. I was there for about two years designing graphic tees and labels for the women’s department.

3. Preferred tool(s) and medium?

I’m a sucker for the classic pen and paper, but sometimes I enjoy lettering on the iPad with the Procreate app. If you haven’t drawn with this app, you’re missing out! The selection of brushes are endless and you can undo your mistakes!

4. Where or how do you “recharge your creative battery,” i.e., books, blogs, music, art, exercise, meditation, prayer, hobbies, interests, etc.?

I guess you can say I’m a gym rat. If I’m not lounging at home with my sketchbook or iPad, I’m usually recharging my creative battery at the gym. It’s nice to take a break from going crazy from staring at lines all day. Now if I find it a bit hard getting out of the house in the winter (I’m not lazy, it really gets cold up here in the North Country! I’m talking like negative 20 degrees haha), you can find me glued to the couch with my lazy but cute pitbull binge-watching some Netflix.

5. Tell us something about you that might surprise or delight us.

Oh man, something that would surprise you? It’s not a hidden talent or anything but I’ll share one of my deepest fears. I’m extremely terrified of fish and butterflies! Maybe I should spend less time on the computer and take advantage of the outdoors haha.
