The Diverse Styles of Leo Gomez

Instagram opened my eyes to the quantity of talented artists and designers who are practice handlettering and calligraphy. Case and point, Leo Gomez, his work is lively, light and diverse in styles. Leo took time from his schedule to indulge my curiosity.

1. Your name and title/business name?

My name is Leo Gomez and I’m the man behind the Leo Gomez Studio. A design studio based in the sunny city of St. Petersburg, FL, USA.

2. Do you have a specialty or special style that makes you relatively unique? If so, what?

My specialty is custom hand lettering and branding. My work is diverse in style, but a big part of what I do involves script lettering and letterforms created with brush pens. What’s so unique about my work is that I spend several hours drawing over and over the letterforms until I find the sweet spot. I’ll do as many sketches as it takes and explore many options in order to create a design that is truly unique.

3. What’s your educational background, i.e., college, professional school, high school, apprenticeship, etc.?

I graduated from the School of Advertising art with associate degree in graphic design. Hand lettering and branding came very natural to me. Growing up, I spent my teenager days dreaming of building brands, sketching, taking art classes and doing graffiti art.

4. Preferred tool(s) and medium?

Pencils, of course. Brush pens, microns and tracing paper. I use these tools everyday! My favorites are: Zebra disposable pen, Tombow dual brush and Kuretake No33.

5. Where or how do you “recharge your creative battery,” i.e., books, blogs, music, art, exercise, meditation, prayer, hobbies, interests, etc.?

I recharge by spending time outdoors. Things in the studio can get really busy, so I try to take brakes that involves getting outside. I usually ride my bicycle for a few hours and come back with a fresh mind, ideas and attitude towards my work. I’m lucky to live near by the ocean, visiting the beach on the weekends helps my perspective and motivates me to create bigger and better work.

I also love checking out typography books. I recently bought the book Outside the Box by Gail Anderson and I haven’t been able to put it down. Its full of hand-drawn packaging case studies from around the world. This book is pure gold!

6. Tell us something about you that might surprise or delight us.

I love vinyl records, I’ve got huge collection. I can also speak 2 languages!
