The chalk work of Kiko Ardiansjah

Big pieces and small – what Kiko Ardiansjah does with chalk and soft pastels is extraordinary! His work is influenced by fantasy fiction and metal music.

1. Your name and title/business name?

My name is Kiko Ardiansjah, a retired advertising guy after 10 years trapped in the industry, and become a lettering enthusiast since late 2012 under the name Regalis Apertura (however, I’m not considered this as a business name). I live in Jakarta, Indonesia.

2. Do you have a specialty or special style that makes you relatively unique? If so, what?

I don’t really feel that I’m that unique, but as a big fans of chalk lettering, I trully have emotional bond with this kind of style. Most of the time, I’m expressing my thoughts with lettering, I respond [to] anything surrounding me, like social matters in a friendly way (mostly gag with local slang language), so that people could see this as a powerful message and aesthetic form at the same time.

3. What’s your educational background, i.e., college, professional school, high school, apprenticeship, etc.?

I studied advertising in colege, graduated as communication diploma. So yes, I’m a self-taught graphic / lettering designer, I learn alot from friends, books, internet articles and other works.

A-Walking-Miracle4. Preferred tool(s) and medium?

I’m in love with chalks and anything black as a surface. I’m using black painted MDF panel for bigger dimension, and when I want to simulate chalk-ish effect on smaller size, I use texturized black paper, I found that pastel pencils, chalks and soft pastel blocks are the best tool to fit my needs so far. However, for sketching purposes I’m using 0.5mm to 2.0mm mechanical pencils and plenty of 100 gsm plain papers.

5. Where or how do you “recharge your creative battery,” i.e., books, blogs, music, art, exercise, meditation, prayer, hobbies, interests, etc.?

I tend to pushed my self to travel overseas at least once a year, I believe with seeing something new (culture, places, environment, foods) can recharge our creative battery and make a huge different with ourself in the next years ahead.

In my daily routines, I’m a casual guitar hobbyist, an avid listener to 80s-90s Rock and all kind of metal music, from Glam to Technical Death (Usually, they had album artwork which produced by world’s finest illustrator / painter / designer, one of the best source of inspirations in my opinion). Those epic-fantasy movies like Lord of The Ring and Game of Thrones also perfect references to trigger our imagination and creativity.

I have a crush on unhealthy foods, a big fans to “Eat Street” in NatGeo People tv channel.

6. Tell us something about you that might surprise or delight us.

To be honest, I cannot draw (especially human / animal figure), but I have an extra interest in letters and words. So I started to learn lettering on sticky notes about 3 years ago, and become my favourite things to do ever since. ’till this moment, I’m still struggling to learn how to draw things properly. I’m adorer to minimlistic / abstract photography and using this to find out the mysteries between composition and colour relationship.
